The hammocks and chairs are made by people in rural El Salvador. Thanks to the export of these traditional items, people can make a living in their own village and do not have to move out to the city in search of work. Their own culture and identity are thus safeguarded.
The first step in the production process is to dye the cotton in bright, cheerful colours. Bales of pure cotton are dipped into large dye kettles and then left to dry in the sun in the middle of the village. Then they wind the cotton on small spools. The hammocks are traditionally woven on a handloom and then finished with wickerwork. Next, the hammock is fitted with a spreader bar and ˜hanging cords'. These cords provide a proportional distribution of weight allowing one to sit very comfortably in the chair.
